Dropping off a piece of your very own furniture at Sam Maloof's historic home to be exhibited is tremendously humbling. Our credenza Doug will be living in Alta Loma, CA through January 2, 2016 for the show titled California Handmade: State of the Arts. The exhibition is a joint venture between the Maloof Foundation and the Craft in America Center, curated by its director, Emily Zaiden. Craft in America's words:
The exhibition takes inspiration from the California Design shows originated by the Pasadena Art Museum in the 1950’s. Craft advocate and curator Eudorah Moore (1918‐2014), whose writings helped to define the studio craft movement in America, organized the last California Design exhibition in 1976. With nearly forty years having passed since the last of these important and influential shows, this exhibition seeks to refresh our appreciation of California artists in the 21st century.
The structure of the show is broken into two parts, starting with 12 core accomplished artists. From there each core artist recommended 6 CA based colleagues in his or her field. We fall into the latter category. Collectively, the show features the work of over 80 artists in furniture, sculpture, textiles, jewelry and decorative arts. In addition to the exhibition at the Maloof Foundation, a selection of additional work by the 12 core artists will be on view at the Craft in America Center from July through September.
